How Does Bowen Therapy Work?

The Bowen Technique is one of the best modalities for resetting the bodies nervous system. It is a gentle technique that utilizes small rolls over the different muscles, tendons or ligaments in the body. This creates a piezoelectric current that sends a signal to the brain, and the brain starts to reset the body back to its original patterns of balance. The beautiful part about it is that the practitioner is only the facilitator reminding the innate wisdom of YOUR body.

When the body has been under any type of mental stress or a physical/emotional trauma all of that will register in the body. Your nervous system is always attempting to maintain equilibrium but when it has been traumatized it remains in fight/flight/freeze mode making healing more difficult. Bowen therapy takes the body out of this fight/flight/freeze mode and allows it to feel safe again. When this happens, the body can now start to heal because it is no longer in survival mode. Everything in the body is about priority to maintain its existence.

What Bowen Is Not

It is not acupressure or massage.

A Session

You stay fully clothed during a session

You must be well hydrated and mineralized before a session. EmergenC or Nuun work great.

Sessions range from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

It is not recommended for anyone who is pregnant unless they have had multiple sessions prior to pregnancy. Bowen can create a slight detox affect as it is a great lymph drainer and that is not recommended for the unborn baby.

What Can You Expect from Bowen Therapy?

A therapy session can last for 30 minutes to an hour. Before getting down to the treatment process, the Bowen therapist will assess the client and ask about their pain and discomfort. A client is advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing to make it easier for the therapist to palpate the muscles in question.

After performing the first set of moves, the therapist leaves the client to relax for a few minutes. As well as giving the muscles time to soften, the short break also activates the body's ability to self-heal. Not everybody requires a follow-up session, but those with chronic conditions will need at least three therapy sessions to completely resolve their problem.

Is Bowen Therapy Safe?

The Bowen Technique is safe and noninvasive. Unlike other forms of manual therapies, it doesn't apply pressure to the body, just gentle rolling movements. This is what makes it safe and beneficial for anyone. Even newborns, pregnant women, elderly people and frail individuals will benefit from this holistic approach to healing.

Any time your body takes a hit or experiences shock, it starts registering those new stress patterns. This creates aches and pains that can stick around for decades. Your body gets locked into fight-or-flight mode, essentially running the same stress loop over and over.

When this happens, your body thinks it's still in crisis mode - so survival becomes its main focus instead of healing. It's like having an alarm system that won't turn off, even when the danger has passed. Your body stays so busy protecting itself that it doesn't have the energy or resources left to actually repair and restore.

This is why trauma can show up as physical symptoms years later, and why traditional approaches sometimes fall short. Your body needs to feel safe again before it can remember how to heal.

In a session, Bowen therapy and other gentle treatments work together to take your body out of survival mode so it can feel safe enough to start healing again. Many times healing simply can't happen until your body believes it's truly safe.

Over the years, I've discovered a synergy of treatments that helps people break free from locked patterns - even ones that have been there for decades. When dealing with trauma or injury, I combine Bowen with other gentle modalities that work with your body's natural reflexes rather than against them.

The beautiful truth is: your body WANTS to heal. We just need to remind it how to find itself again.

Specialized Jaw Procedure TMJ/Migraine Support

Many people carry stress and tension in the jaw from clenching, teeth grinding, or injury. This hidden strain can trigger headaches, migraines, and tightness throughout the face, neck, and shoulders.

The Bowen Jaw Procedure is a gentle, precise series of moves that release the muscles and structures of the jaw. Instead of forcing change, it allows the body to reset naturally, easing pressure, improving jaw function, and supporting nervous system balance.

Clients often notice relief from jaw pain, reduced migraine frequency or intensity, easier opening and closing of the mouth, and an overall sense of calm. Because of the jaw’s strong connection to the nervous system, releasing this area can ripple out as whole-body stress relief.

Sometimes the body just needs a gentle reminder of what it already knows — how to rest, realign, and heal itself.
